This month I’ve been preparing two of my paintings to be framed and ready to hang for an upcoming exhibit at Archival Gallery in East Sacramento! The exhibit, A Rose is A Rose, celebrates the traditional representation of floral still life in visual arts. I’m honored to be selected as one of fourteen local and regional artists whose work was selected by juror Davy Fiveash.
When I was doomscrolling online, I came across a clip of a florist on a daytime talkshow who was being asked for tips on how to make flowers last longer in a vase. The florist took a moment, then described flowers in a way that made me tear up slightly, which I will sum up less eloquently here: that flowers take root, they grow, they shine for a fleeting moment, and then they’re gone. They’re not meant to last forever, because they’re here to remind us to stay present.
What I appreciate in floral still life art, is that through all of human history there has been a steady creation of it, which reflects a universal desire to share one's appreciation of those little moments in life of looking at flowers and wanting to appreciate them— what a human thing to do! I’m so excited to be a part of a show that celebrates this special subject matter with other still life artists!
The show will be up from April 1st to the 25th, with a reception on Second Saturday, on April 11th from 5-8pm, with flowers on display from the Rose Society, music and refreshments. A portion of sale proceeds from this collection will also support the nonprofit Sacramento Rose Society. If you’re in the Sacramento area, please come by to take a look at the work on display!
